Parent/Teacher Conferences! - October 13-17th (minimum days this week)

Conferences will be held Monday, October 13st - Friday, October 17th. This week will be a full week of minimum days to allow for great conversation and collaboration between families, teachers, and students. We are using the program Sign Up Genius like last year. Conferences are strongly preferred to take place in person, but also available online if that works better for your schedule. Our goal is to get all parents to participate in these special meetings so we can further the partnership to support your child!

What is it?

The Arts Wheel is a new, free, weekly after school class for our students in grades K-5. We will have multiple fun themes over the course of the year such as Crafts, Painting & Murals, Digital Photography & Graphic Design, and Drawing and Comics.. The classes will be taught by local teaching artists.

Why is it called a “Wheel”?

Each after school class teacher will spend 8 weeks at a school before moving on to another school for the next “rotation”. This way, all participating schools will be able to experience the topic in which each teacher specializes.

How frequent are the classes, and how long is each class?

The once-per-week classes will be approximately 45 minutes long and take place over 8 weeks. For Rotation 1, our Arts Wheel teacher will be on campus on Wednesday and Friday.

Who is it for?

**If your child is already participating in after school YMCA or Beyond the Bell, they will automatically participate in the Arts Wheel through their after school program - no need to register!**

If your child is not in YMCA or BTB, you may register during the registration period using the link provided.

Accessing and Understanding Assessment Scores (iReady)

What is I-Ready

i-Ready is an online, adaptive diagnostic assessment administered to students in reading and math. It's given three times a year—specifically in August, December and May —to measure each student's academic progress. The test is repeated each time, allowing us to consistently measure progress over the course of the school year. The test is designed to measure growth over time, so while the first score provides an initial data point, the real goal is to see an upward trend in subsequent scores.

The score report contains two main types of information: grade-level placement and percentile rank. The grade-level placement tells us if a student is performing at, below, or above their current grade level. The percentile rank, on the other hand, compares student scores based on all other students nationwide who took the same test. The results give us a baseline understanding of our students' performance. Teachers then use this information as one data point out of many more specific data points to support your child throughout the year.

We use these test scores to create customized learning pathways for each student. Our teachers use the data to sort students into flexible learning groups, ensuring every child receives targeted instruction. Your teacher can share the specific learning profile your child was placed in.

Understanding the Levels

Here’s a simple breakdown of the score levels and what they mean:

  • Below Grade Level: This score indicates that a student is still working on those specific skills from previous grade levels.

  • Approaching Grade Level: This is a common and expected score at that time of the year.  It shows that your child is building the foundational skills needed to succeed in their current grade.

  • At Grade Level: A score in this range means your child is on track to master the curriculum for their grade. This is the goal for all students by the end of the year.

  • Above Grade Level: This score indicates that your child has already mastered the skills in this domain for their current grade and your teacher is on giving accelerated work based on the student’s next goal.

The goal is to see an upward trend in scores from the beginning of the year to the end. If you have any concerns about your child's score, please don't hesitate to reach out to your teacher during conferences to discuss ways you can support your child at home. We're all in this together!

Important Notice RE: Items dropped off during school hours.

One of our core values at Theuerkauf is Responsibility. There has been a large increase in items forgotten and dropped off items during the day. Sometimes it is challenging to get items to students in a timely manner and we want to minimize interruptions of lessons during class time so all students can stay focused on their education.

Please support your child at home by going through a quick checklist before leaving: Warm jacket, hat or gloves if needed, lunch box, backpack, instrument, homework, etc.

Thank you for supporting our core value of Responsibility and minimizing classroom interruptions.

If you do need to drop off a forgotten item please label it with the following so there is no confusion or mix ups. Please note that the office staff will do their best to get it to the students in a timely manner:

  1. Student name

  2. Grade

  3. Teacher and Room #

Parenting in the Digital Era: Building Healthy Tech Habits

Date and Time: September 30, 5:30-7:00 p.m.     Registration: http://mvw.sd/pu093025r

Did you know that experts estimate that the average American teen spends 7-8 hours each day on their screens? It’s no wonder that this is a critical parenting topic. Fear not: our friends at My Digital TAT2 are returning to Parent University! At this Speaker Series event, MDT2 will update us on the latest tech trends and discuss the key topics of media literacy, misinformation/ disinformation, and social media influencers. They will also address the burning question: “When is it ok to give my kid a cell phone?” You will be equipped with fresh knowledge and useful strategies to help your family maintain a healthy relationship with tech...and with one another.

To submit questions prior to the event, go to mvw.sd/questions. We will do our best to address your questions during the session.

Mental Health Resources for Students

As the school year starts, it's important for students to know that help is available for mental health challenges that may arise. Check out these posters for information.  Other resources are available at our Virtual Wellness Center under the Mental Health tab. You can always reach out to your school counselor, too. We are here to help.

Is your Student Too Sick for School?

As we enter the cold and flu season, it’s important to know when your student should stay home to rest and recover, as well as to prevent the spread of illness. Please take a moment to read the attached MVWSD’s Back to School Health Guidance flyer. It includes information on when your student should stay home, illness prevention tips and COVID guidelines. Knowing when to keep your student home helps keep our school community healthy and safe. Thank you for your cooperation!

Showing Up Matters….for learning, for friendships, for success

Help our students be their very best by making sure they show up every day and on time! Students that miss 10% of days (or two days a month) of school are considered chronically absent. When we reduce chronic absence we improve graduation rates, increase academic achievement and give young people the best chance at success in their adult life. Showing up on time matters, too! Even showing up 10 minutes late every day causes students to lose a full hour of learning each week. By working together, families and schools can ensure every student has the opportunity to grow, learn and succeed!

Vision and Hearing Screenings

MVWSD conducts hearing and vision screenings of all students in TK/kindergarten, second-, fifth- and eighth-grade, as California State Law mandates. These screenings will take place:

  • at Theuerkauf on October 21 and 22

Parents will be notified in writing if children fail a screening. Parents who do not want their child screened for either vision and/or hearing should send a letter to their child's school each school year indicating that their child is to be excluded, and vision and/or hearing results will need to be provided by their physician.

If you have any concerns about your child’s vision or hearing, please contact your school nurse. Questions about the screenings should be directed to the Health Services office at 650-526-3500 ext. 1050.
