May 13, 2022

Hello, Theurkauf Families!

This has been an exciting week! Please read on for details about end of year activities and more.

Testing and assessment update

This week, our fifth graders finished their science state testing (CAST assessment), and the students who were absent during any of the CAASPP sections of ELA or Math have been completing their make-ups.

Next week, we start with i-Ready on May 16 for Reading and May 18th for Math for all students. Please remember to encourage your child to do their best on these assessments. Here are a few tips for a positive experience for your child:

  • Explain to your child that it is important to do his/her best.

  • Provide positive reinforcement and encourage your child each day.

  • Keep the test in perspective. We want students to do their best, but please make sure they understand that it is only one test. Remind them that if they are doing their best, you are proud.

  • Make sure your child gets an ample, normal amount of sleep the night before the test

  • Make sure to arrive on time each day.

  • Eat a nice, healthy breakfast.

  • Keep a positive attitude about testing around your child. Remind them that this is a time to show what they know.

Library News

The year has flown by and it will be summer before we know it! It has been delightful getting to know your children and seeing their love of reading grow over these past few months. Sadly, this is the last week for students to visit the library. Beginning next week the library will be closed for cleaning and inventory to prepare for summer storage. All books are due back to the library by Friday, May 20th. I will provide a bin in front of the library for your convenience starting next week.

If a book has been lost or damaged, cash is payable to the library and I will provide a receipt. If you find a replacement for a lost book for less than the price listed on overdue notices, I will gladly accept it, given that it is in good condition.

Thank you again for all of your support to the library this year! If you would like to purchase books for Theuerkauf over the summer, the link for the library wish list is here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/GZZQ8W9A27LN?ref_=wl_share

Have a fun and safe summer! I look forward to seeing you all again in August.

Warm regards,

Mrs. B.

Chromebook returns - June 2nd and 3rd

All students in grades TK-4 and those not planning to attend a MVWSD school next year will need to turn in their chromebooks before the end of the school year on June 3rd. We will need both the chromebook and the charger. Please be on the lookout for the schedule for your child's class to return their devices soon. Students will be turning in their Chromebooks so that they can be updated and repaired over the summer. All returning students will get their devices back in August.

5th Grade Promotion Ceremony

5th grade families, please save the date for our 5th Grade Celebration!  We are planning an in-person (outdoor) event to honor and celebrate our 5th graders before they move on to middle school on Thursday, June 2nd at 1:00 PM. This will be a very casual event and we are asking that you limit your guests to no more than 4 adults per child. Please RSVP for this event by completing this form.

Reminder: Please upload your child’s completed vaccine card

When your child's vaccine card has their second shot listed, please upload a copy to Powerschool. Vaccine cards will be referred to in the case of a positive COVID exposure for your student, and MVWSD needs accurate data for decisions about COVID protocols. Click here for a video that shows you how to upload documents: https://vimeo.com/606954357. Thank you in advance for uploading your documents now!

Reminder: Principal’s Virtual Office Hours

This is just a friendly reminder that you are invited to join me each Wednesday for our informal Principal Office Hours (virtual through Zoom) from 4pm - 5:00pm. Feel free to drop in if you have any questions or if you just want to chat. For office hours, there is no formal agenda, it is a time for you to stop in to say hello, and for us to get to know each other better! I look forward to seeing you!

Save the date - In-Person PTA Association Meeting will be held on May 25th at 6pm ????????????

Join us for Pizza & PTA! We will supply the pizza, please join us for the meeting and discussion. Children are welcome.

Please email [email protected] if you are interested in taking on this role.

May Better Together Infographic

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which celebrates the histories of Americans hailing from across the Asian continent and from the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. May 7, 1843, marks the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States. And May 10, 1869, or Golden Spike Day, recognizes the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S., which had significant contributions from Chinese workers. AAPI Heritage Month gives us a chance to celebrate and center the unique journey of all AAPI immigrants and citizens in the United States and their unique life experiences, traditions, and cultures. Please see the attached flyers or visit http://mvwsd.org/bettertogetherMVWSD.

MVWSD seeking District Equity Advisory Committee members

MVWSD is continuing our work by engaging meaningfully with the community on issues of equity through the District Equity Advisory Committee (DEAC). The goal of the DEAC is to provide feedback to the Superintendent on how to support MVWSD towards achieving its goals of becoming a more equitable and inclusive school district.

We are seeking a combination of district-level leaders, principals, teachers, staff members, and parent participants who represent the interests of both elementary and middle schools. Committee members will be expected to attend and participate virtually in meetings held monthly (on average) online during the 2022-23 school year in the evening hours. The average commitment will be approximately 20 hours per academic school year.

Applications are due by June 3 and found at this link. More information is at https://www.mvwsd.org/about/committees.
