From the Principal's Desk

Hello, Theuerkauf families!

Our teachers and students are so excited to welcome you next week to our first in-person Open House in several years! Families are invited to visit all of our classrooms to celebrate student learning on Thursday, March 23rd, from 6:00-7pm. Please see below in the School News Section for the schedule of events Open House.

BUILDING STRONG FAMILIES: Celebrating Inclusion and Community, Tuesday, March 28, Theuerkauf MUR

Theuerkauf and Stevenson families will join together with Project Cornerstone for a dynamic workshop, dinner, and an opportunity to build community on the evening of Tuesday, March 28th, from 6:00pm-7:30pm. Dinner and childcare will be provided at no cost. Please sign up here: tinyurl.com/MVWSDInclusion. Read more here: English | Español.

Safety Reminder:

We have seen an increase in tardies over the past few weeks. Students need to be inside the school gates, lined up by 8:10am each day (in the MUR if the weather is inclement or temperatures are below 50 degrees). If a student arrives after the gates close at 8:15, they must walk through the front office to get a late slip. This is critical so that we can account for them and mark them present; otherwise, they may still be marked absent in the system.

If you are running late, please remember SAFETY FIRST.  Do NOT have your child run across the street or parking lot.  Do NOT allow your child to exit the car while you are still in traffic--wait until you get into the car circle or park at the curb.

As always, thank you for your partnership. Together, we make a difference!

Yours in service,

Michelle Williams, Principal

School News

Open House, Graded K-5, Thursday, March 23rd, 6-7pm

Our teachers and students are so excited to welcome you to our first in-person Open House in a few years!  Families are invited to visit all of our classrooms to celebrate student learning on Thursday, March 23rd, from 6:00-7pm. *Please note that our TK Open House will occur next week, 3/30 at 5pm.*

  • 6:00-7:00

    • Classrooms open for visits from current Theuerkauf families

    • Ongoing Art Show held in the Library

  • 5:40-6:00

    • Meet and greet with the Principal for incoming new families whose children will be starting in the 23-24 school year in the MUR (Cafeteria)

In case you have never been to an Open House before, this is what to expect:

  • In each classroom, students will be sharing the work they've completed during the first two trimesters of our school year. Your child will show you artifacts of their learning.

  • Families and students are also welcome and encouraged to visit other classrooms on campus. Students often appreciate seeing classrooms at the next grade level or visiting their old classrooms. One way to provide support to students during Open House will be to offer feedback to the students regarding something that you found interesting or impactful as you visit each room.

  • The ongoing art show in the library will feature select work samples of our students.  Families can visit the library at any time during the Open House window.

  • Norms for our Open House: This evening will be a time to celebrate student learning. However, it is NOT a time for parent/teacher conferences. If you have specific questions about your child’s progress, please contact your child’s teacher to meet at a different time. Also, please keep in mind: teaching and classroom assignments for the next school year will not be finalized until the summer. For example, if you visit a 1st grade classroom, that may not be a 1st grade classroom/teacher next school year. The purpose of visiting the next grade’s classroom is to preview what some of the next grade level's work products may look like and to provide all students with a rich experience of feedback.

  • Plan your meals ahead of time and use a grocery list

  • Choose seasonal fruits and vegetables, which are often less expensive and more flavorful

Health and Wellness Parenting Tip: Calming Your Mind

When we feel stressed, our minds tend to jump to the past (I should have...) or to the future (What if...?). The problem is that we cannot change the past nor control the future. Focusing on the present can help us take control of our current situation and help us feel calmer and more relaxed.

Watch this video to learn more about how mindfulness can help you (or your child) be more present and relaxed.

To calm your (or your child’s) mind:

  1. Look around you, and name five things you see. Pick one object, and describe what it looks like, what color, what size, and what shape it is.

  2. Look for four things you can touch. Pick one of those items to touch, and describe how it feels.

  3. Name three things that you can hear. At first, it might seem that there is not much to hear, but listen carefully. Focus on one sound, and describe it.

  4. Look for two things you can smell. Focus on one smell, and describe it.

  5. Find one thing you can taste. Focus on the taste and describe it.

You can repeat these steps every time you feel stressed to come back to the present moment.
